Baana Kaatahadi (2010)

Baana Kaathadi is a film which shows the craze on kites that kids in Tamil Nadu especially in Chennai have for kites. It actually shows how the kids don't even care about their own lives while chasing for a kite that is unclaimed. The movies starts with showing one such run. The hero who chases the kite without bothering about public falls over the heroine and accidentally takes her pen drive consisting of her college project. The heroine tries to find this guy and get the pen drive back. In due course the heroine and hero fall in love but gets separated due to some reason. The heroine then understands that the fault was not that of the hero's and woos him for the rest of the movie. In the mean time hero witnesses a crime while it is in progress and the guys who did the crime are ready to kill him. What happens towards the last whether the hero is killed by the gangsters or does he accept the heroines love or does he not accept her is the question that the climax answers. Good script and screenplay. Slow but steady on its pace.

Shooter (2007)

Shooter is brilliant story about a sniper who is asked by US officials from the agency and bureau to help them in solving a threat that they had received regarding the assassination of the President. The sniper considered to be the best among the living goes around and figures out where the shot may be taken from. The day of the assassination comes and the sniper finds out that he was in the middle of a political plot where in the people whom he helped are trying to kill the President and frame him. He escapes and as in all movies goes after the guys who screwed him up. The plot is very good the speed of the movie very stable and the rhythm not dropping at all. Good work on covering the angles chosen by a sniper. Great movie to watch.

The Hessen Affair (2009)

The Hessen Affair is a story that happens in the 1940's. Visualized beautifully the movie goes on to show a new military official from the US joining in at Berlin. The time when the US had captured Berlin. As all conquerors  once they had Germany the US militants start sketching out various parts of the castle and the city looking for valuables. This new officer with a little help from one his subordinates find the Crown Jewels. The Official decides to sell the crown jewel in New York and keep the fortune with his crew (who know about these jewels). The story goes on to show how the Crown Jewels are smuggled into New York and how they loose the jewels and at the end do they make a fortune out of it on not. A rather interesting but slow story to watch. As said earlier visualizing old Berlin is really something they had worked around.

Godspeed (2010)

Godspeed is a very complex movie to understand. Its a movie about a preacher who preaches ideas and seems to have the gift of healing others. It starts with one of his sessions at the church addressing some people. All the preacher does is help people understand their worries and face them. This is not really healing but a means to healing (the person releived of his stress automatically can concentrate and put in more energy into healing himself). The story then moves on to show the preachers family being killed and the preacher goes into exile to mourn for his family. One day he finds himself in the company of a girl who says that someone in her family needs help. She forces him to go with her to her place and there it all starts. The girl's brother is a person who tries to create a new world which depends on the principle "an eye for an eye". The clash between this guy, the preacher and the emotional tension that the girl undergoes is what the movie is all about. Visuals are real good and the locations very carefully chosen. A movie you can watch if you are looking for a complex subject and if you dont have anyone else at home. There is this one scene in the middle of the movie which requires Parental Guidance. Otherwise all is well.

Fantastic Mr. Fox (2009)

Fantastic Mr. Fox is a story about a fox has his own way with things and gets away. The star cast the fox in this story is very smart and wants his life to be fantastic as himself. The story starts with he and his gal going on and stealing and getting caught in the act. But whence he hears about the baby on its way from his gal he promises her that he will not take such risks anymore. After all was well and life was going redundant Mr.Fox felt his life to be very low in quality. Hence he goes on to buy a better house for his family to live in. Near this house are three dangerous farmers each of who grows a different thing that Mr. Fox likes. Mr. Fox getting all is old memories goes on to steal from each farmer a day. During his third but last theft the farmers track him down to his home. They try to catch the fox. The story goes on to say whether the Fox and his family and friends survive the Farmers. A simple and straight forward script. Good animation and better message in the story make you to pass time easily.

The Karate Kid (2010)

 

Karate Kid is a movie starring Jaden Smith (Will Smith’s kiddo) and Jackie Chan. The story of a small boy who has to move to China due to his mother’s employment issue. The boy finds it hard to adjust to the new environment. In China he tries to hook up with a little gal where in he gets into trouble with the local boys. The story continues to show how Jackie helps this boy to stand up to the bullies he met while trying to hook up with that gal. Life in China shown beautifully. Especially the festival and the culture.  The script is just the normal. To see Jaden do all that Kung Fu is astonishing and the moves are mind blowing. By the way one thing I didn’t understand till the end and till now is that why this movie was named Karate Kid when actually the movie was all about teaching Kung Fu. A good movie in case you need to pass time.

Law Abiding Citizen (2009)

A Brilliant story line starring Gerard Butler and Jamie Foxx both people of the law who face the worst of each other. The story starts with showing a happy family of Gerard with daughter and wife. The next moment both wife and child are killed and Gerard is left to mourn for them. Gerard’s attorney Jamie Foxx who plays a budding DA thrives to keep his execution rate high and moves some cards in the wrong manner which Gerard the frustrated man here doesn’t like. Gerard decides to take justice into is own hands and how he does it and with whose help he does it is really astonishing. The script is fast and the speed never slows. The dialogues in the movie are very apt and when ever somebody in the movie makes a point the same is crystal clear. Brilliant combination between Gerard and Jamie. Great storyline and apt visuals makes the movie a treat to watch. A treat with a very strong message I should say.

The Last Airbender (2010)

 

The story is about skilled people of four types for benders (people who can bend the four elements – earth, fire, water and air). Each of the bender tribes live in harmony in four different parts of the world when the fire benders decide to show their supremacy by conquering and ruling over the other tribes. When the start their conquest they seem to have conquered a whole lot of the world and stil progressing. When all hope is lost there comes one boy who is set to change the state of affairs. The boy comes from a long line of Air Benders and the last of his kind. the air Benders are considered to be the ones with supreme power as they are considered to master all four elements and become the avatar. But the boy only knows how to bend Air in the beginning then they move on to the Water kingdoms to learn the art of bending Water. The movie goes on to tell whether or not the boy could stop the fire kingdom. The movie being 3D could have been more vivid. The expectations were to much as it was a film from Night Shyamalan. He had always cornered the visuals but may be because this was his first shot at 3D that he couldn’t score the same. A great hats-off to Dev Patel who plays Prince Zuko (an angry prince who wants to capture the air bender in order to get back his honor in his fathers kingdom). His exceptional acting has provided a great deal to this movie. The main character being a boy is apt. Overall the picture has a good flow but dont expect too much of anything cos the film is a film nothing more to say about it.

Madharasapattinam (2010)

 

Madharasapattinam a great movie by Vijay. Just like the tag line says it is truly a journey from Chennai to Madharasapattinam. I had a good opportunity of watching this film in 70mm and man I should say that I was happy to have watched it that way. The actual story starts in Madharasapattinam during the pre-independence period. The time when the British were almost ready to quit India. A lovely love story place in the era between Arya (playing Parithi, a dhobi) and Amy (who plays Amy, the Governor's daughter). The story line, very simple they meet, they fall in love and they do all sorts of things as in any Tamil movie to keep their love alive. The exceptional beauty and extraordinary feel comes from the sets. The visuals are mind blowing and to see the old Madharasapattinam the same place we live in some 5 decades back was really a treat. The places drawn just like from an old album was sheer brilliance. CG and camera giving the most support that is required for a film such as this. Music throughout the film is a very big added advantage. Amy should be credited for her exceptional lip movements while her dialogues are in Tamil. Even in the songs Lip movements sync a lot better than our Indian Kollywood actresses. The whole team has done a spectacular job in bringing this alive. They did also do mistakes like whatever they copied from non Tamil movies were very obvious and we did notice it at first. Also a chase sequence placed in this film was too long which gets us go tired at some point. Other than these a wonderful movie, wonderful script and wonderful execution from the cast an crew.

Taking Chance (2009)

 

Taking Chance a beautiful story told in a very impressive manner. The story line is very simple and straight to the point. It is about an officer who offers to escort the remains of his deceased fellow man to his relatives.  I should say but the fact that all comes in to create a sense of awareness that a soldier dead or alive is treated with honor and patronage where ever he goes. The movie shows the escort being treated with all dignity and it also goes on to show how his fellow man who is now deceased and is carried around in a coffin is also given greater respect by people from all over. The officer after reaching his destination and amidst the family and friends of the deceased discovers something that he had been searching for all his life. Kevin Bacon has shown exceptional acting skills and should really be credited for the same. Every time he gets near the coffin his reactions and the way he moves are very much telling us exactly how and what was really going on in his head. The director should also be credited for bringing such a nice artifact to us. Nothing big been worked on the visuals nor the sounds. For people who love fast movies this is not really for you. The movie stands for human as well as marine values.

Prince of Persia : Sands of Time (2010)

 

Prince of Persia a movie with lots of sights and sounds. The story starts with an urchin from the streets is adopted by the king as brother to two princes. The brothers grow up as family in unity and differences. The story goes on that the brothers go for war against a sacred city under the influence of their uncle. The brothers turn out to be successful in the war and Dastan the urchin prince stands to be the cause of the victory. The urchin price is given a big banquet in honor of what he had done. In that banquet the urchin looses his king and is made to be enemy of the state. From there the prince taking along with him the princess who is the guardian of an ancient secret she beholds. Time passes by and Dastan finds out the secret that the princess had been keeping from him and from there enrolls a series of events that turns back the sands of time. A truly adventurous movie to watch. Great visuals and camera  effects. CG has done its part and a true pleasure to watch. The prince Dastan moves just like the one in the game, sliding through slopes, running across walls and using every bit of the place. Truly a worthwhile mythical movie.

The Book of Eli (2010)

 

The Book of Eli is a fantasy of what would be life after the apocalypse. The few that survive the apocalypse what they do and how they survive. The movie starts with Denzel Washington (Eli) hunting down an animal for food. Next they show him walking along the down trodden roads and bridges trying to get to some place. He is met on his way by nasty men who wants to rob him but he gets away from them with his weapons he carry. Then the story opens up as Gary Oldman comes into picture. It shows him sending his men in all possible directions to get a book that would give him supreme power. The book is later seen to be with Eli who would even kill anybody to protect it and get it to the right hands. But Gary Oldman and his men are determined to get it from them. The story climaxes answering the question of who wins the book and what the book is about. Again a great twist in the climax makes the movie worth the time spent. Great visuals and as usual great control on acting shown by Denzel Washington in his new attire.

Shutter Island (2010)

 

Shutter Island should be mentioned as another feather to Leonardo DiCaprio’s hat. The skill of acting displayed in this movie is tremendous. The movie starts of with the DiCaprio and a buddy of his (Both from a police dept) come to  Shutter Island to investigate the case of a missing patient. Now Shutter Island as they show is the most secured facility for Mentally affected people. The Island has three blocks for categorizing these patients. One block for the Men, another for the women and the third one for most dangerous patients. The missing patient is from the third block. As the investigation goes on DiCaprio finds that the facilities staffs have a lot of things that they keep to themselves and he deduces his own ways to find the truth. He also finds out that the staff have been medicating him to make him into one of the patients in the facility. With all this being said he some how gets up all his courage and goes out to find the truth. The climax being does he find the truth or does he understand the truth. A lovely twist at the climax makes the movie worth the time. DiCaprio’s acting vs the camera vs the beauty of the Island makes it another good movie to watch.

Kites (2010)

Hey all, after a long time it is good to write about a lovely movie that I watched recently. Kites a movie for people who love the United States, Hrithik for his moves, passion of love and great visuals. The movie is fully shot out in the united states and Mexico. A lot of Spanish which is a beautiful language and hot Miss Barbara Mori. The cast and crew of kite have put together a marvelous show of visual against Hrithik’s ability to act. The story starts with Mexicans finding a man who has been shot in a carriage train. The man is then treated and from there rolls the flash back which has an awesome and fast story to itself. The flash back goes almost all through the movie where they show his life in the days before he got shot, how he came to meet the hot Barbara and what was the reason he is in the position he was found. The man all through this climax goes in search of his one beloved passion of that time which is his love (Barbara). A mix of Romance and Action in an attire like never before. Truly uplifting the thoughts of Indians that once day Indian movies will get in line with Hollywood movies.
